being petted by women

(…) the man Schlamovitz who, it seemed, spent an extraordinary existence, being petted by women in Montmartre (‘My dear what a beautiful boy!’) and at regular intervals being arrested and taken to jail. He had been expelled from Paris two years before.

‘Well,’ said Stephan. ‘What can you expect? When he was fourteen a rich old woman adopted him. And she made love to him very soon because he was so beautiful. Then she died without leaving him a penny.’ (this man being so it seems a pimp. ‘Oh, they’re fond of their men, these girls, I tell you’).
